From personal branding to storytelling and leadership to overcoming burnout

MARLEQ: What are the most common reasons employees leave an organization today?

Amy: The most common reasons employees leave organizations today are not feeling appreciated. This can be from not feeling connected to management to not feeling adequately compensated.

MARLEQ: How can employees increase their visibility and perceived value in their current role?

Amy: For employees to increase their visibility and perceived value in their current role, they can collect evidence from fellow employees in the form of testimonials.

MARLEQ: Why does personal branding matter in career growth, and where should someone start?

Amy: Personal branding starts with LinkedIn in today’s market. Having a strong headline and an about section, followed by having strong skills listed.

MARLEQ: How can professionals effectively communicate (or “pitch”) their contributions and impact?

Amy: Professionals can effectively communicate or pitch their contributions and impact by highlighting testimonials of their skills.

MARLEQ: What differentiates a manager from a true leader in an organization?

Amy: Leaders focus on vision, inspiration and long-term strategy while managers focus on executing tasks, maintaining structure and controlling operations. Leaders innovate, empower people and take risks, whereas managers administer, optimize processes and manage short-term goals. Essentially, leaders guide change, while managers ensure stability.

MARLEQ: I feel stuck in my career. How can I identify what’s holding me back and move forward?

Amy: Feeling stuck in a career is often caused by skills gaps, lack of visibility, fear or limiting beliefs. To move forward, reflect on your core values, create a skills matrix comparing your current role to your target and take “tiny bold moves”, like networking, updating your resume or learning one new skill.

MARLEQ: I’m getting interviews but no offers. What am I likely missing?

Amy: Getting interviews but no offers usually means you are qualified on paper but failing to demonstrate your “unique value” add or cultural fit during the conversation. Common pitfalls include not connecting your experience directly to the company’s specific problems, low energy/enthusiasm or providing vague, non quantifiable answers that don’t make you memorable.

MARLEQ: How can I develop strong storytelling skills in interviews and professional settings?

Amy: Developing strong storytelling skills involves capturing everyday moments, using the PAST framework (Place, Action, Speech, Thoughts) for vividness and practicing regularly to build confidence. Key techniques include starting with a compelling hook, highlighting emotional, relatable struggles, using concise details, and employing a clear narrative structure like context-adversity-resolution.

MARLEQ: I feel exhausted and disengaged at work. How can I restore my energy and motivation?

Amy: Feeling exhausted and disengaged is often a common sign of burnout, which is often a result of chronic stress rather than simply a lack of sleep. To restore your energy and motivation, you need to transition from grinding to strategically managing your energy, setting strict boundaries and reconnecting with purpose.

MARLEQ: I exceeded my targets but didn’t receive the expected promotion. What should I do next?

Amy: Feeling overlooked after exceeding targets is frustrating, but it is a critical moment to transition from doing great work to strategically managing your career. High performers are sometimes kept in place because they are deemed valuable to move, or they fail to demonstrate leadership capabilities beyond their current role.
